Africa and back again - Swifts (Apus apus)
Nothing says summer more than the appearance of Swifts after their extraordinary 3,500 mile migration from Africa. These beautiful birds grace us with their presence, diving around the summer skies with their extraordinary rooftop acrobatics.
Si was inspired to pen this work for the 2025 Stoney Middleton Well Dressing. They are shown around the barns overlooking the top of Ladybower Reservoir.
Swifts are now on the Red List, their numbers having dropped to a third of previous levels over the last 25 years.
