New Participatory Art Exhibition Invites Sheffield to Show That 'It All Begins with Kindness…'

Sheffield, UK – August 2026 – Sheffield artist Si Homfray is inviting the city to take part in a unique interactive exhibition celebrating kindness, community and connection.

Opening on Friday 14 August at Park Designs Gallery & Shop on Brown Street, opposite Sheffield Railway Station, It All Begins with Kindness… encourages visitors to contribute their own messages of kindness to create a growing collaborative artwork that will be displayed in the gallery window over the coming months.

At the heart of the exhibition is The Feather of Kindness – a simple but powerful idea. Every visitor is invited to write a kind thought, record an act of kindness, or share a considerate message on the back of a feather-shaped postcard. The postcards are free and open to everyone.

Each feather will become part of a colourful, ever-growing installation, transforming individual moments of kindness into a collective visual expression of the city's generosity.

"We hope this artwork becomes a reminder that, despite everything we hear and see, the vast majority of people are kind," says Si Homfray. "Most of us simply want good things for one another. If this exhibition encourages even one extra act of kindness each day, it will have achieved something special."

Visitors are encouraged to write anything positive that they feel contributes to the world's "bank of kindness"—whether it is a thank you, a memory, an encouraging message or recognition of someone who has made a difference in their life.

As a thank you for taking part, every participant will receive a complimentary goodie bag to take home.

The exhibition also aims to celebrate Sheffield's reputation as one of the friendliest places in the UK.

"People often say Sheffield is the biggest village in the world," says Si Homfray. "Let's see if we can prove it's the kindest as well."

Alongside the participatory installation, original artworks will be available for purchase throughout the exhibition, with proceeds helping to raise funds for Roundabout, the Sheffield charity supporting young people experiencing homelessness—a cause that is particularly close to the artist's heart.

Everyone is invited to visit the gallery, add their feather to the installation, and become part of a growing celebration of kindness that belongs to the whole city.
