Slippery Stones – A Bridge Moved Several Miles for Posterity

At the head of the Derwent Water reservoir, where the road finally ends and the track carries on a little further, you reach one of the quietest and most remote corners of the Peak District. Here, the river is crossed by an old stone bridge, with the slippery stones of the riverbed giving the place its name.

It is a sublime spot — sometimes surprisingly busy, but more often beautifully quiet. A place to stop, sit for a while and simply take in everything that makes the Peak District so special: the wildlife, the water, the open landscape and that wonderful sense of being somewhere remote.

A place to pause, breathe and enjoy.

Such a joy.
