It all began in a field below the grouse inn in the Peak District.
My personal inspiration for drawing hay meadows, and in particular trying to find a new way to represent these incredibly beautiful, wild and now increasingly disappearing natural phenomena started in the hay meadow field below the pub that neighbours the paths to white edge and froggatt edge in the Peak.
So looking at all the varieties of grasses was great fun, there was so much shape and so many differences between the grass heads. I turned to common hay meadow grasses such as crested dog’s tail, cock’s foot, yorkshire fog, common bent, meadow foxtail, quaking grass and false oat grass. Starting with literal drawings and then focussing in the detail and difference, these shapes were transformed into more spontaneous abstracted representations, not unlike paper cuts that can be used for large blocks of solid colour.
Kindest and love,
