Birchen Edge – The Peak District
The drawing here, in Si’s own distinctive style, features Nelson’s Monument, commemorating the Battle of Trafalgar.
Standing behind the 1810 monument, which rises around 3 metres high, is the gritstone edge and a trio of distinctive rocks known as the Three Ships. Named Victory, Defiance and Royal Sovereign, they commemorate three of the ships commanded by Nelson during the Battle of Trafalgar.
Birchen Edge is a striking gritstone escarpment set within open Peak District moorland, surrounded by heather and close to the Robin Hood Inn — an excellent place to stop for food and drink after a hard-earned walk.
Popular with both walkers and climbers, Birchen Edge offers a range of climbing routes, many of which are relatively low grade, making it a particularly good location for those developing their climbing skills.
