Cricket – The sound of leather on willow
Ashford-in-the-Water is famous for many things, not least the beautiful Sheepwash Bridge, Holy Trinity Parish Church, the nearby Thornbridge Estate, and its many hotels, pubs, restaurants and places to eat and drink.
Personally, I believe one of its most memorable features is found on sublime summer evenings, when cricket is played openly and publicly on the ground near the Bakewell Road. There is something wonderfully timeless about watching the game unfold as the evening light fades — the sound of leather on willow, the cheers from the boundary and the gentle rhythm of village life.
Such quintessential Englishness.
