Alport Castles, Peak District
Alport Dale, where Alport Castles reigns over the Dark Peak, has an air of remote wilderness. This feeling is enhanced by the tottering towers and eroded rock faces of Alport Castles, a dramatic series of gritstone debris mounds that resemble the remains of a ruined medieval castle.
Described as ‘castles in the air’, Alport Castles is one of the geological showplaces and scenic highlights of the Peak District National Park, set within one of its most remote and wild landscapes.
A prominent, standalone gritstone mound, known as the Tower, rises above the surrounding debris, giving the formation much of its distinctive castle-like appearance.
The Circular Walk: There is a popular circular route from Fairholmes Car Park, near Ladybower Reservoir, which covers around 10 miles.
