Africa and back again.
Swifts (Apus apus)
Nothing says summer more than the appearance of Swifts after their extraordinary 3,500 mile migration from Africa. These beautiful birds grace us with their presence, diving around the summer skies with their extraordinary rooftop acrobatics.
Si Homfray has drawn these Swifts around the barns overlooking the top of Ladybower Reservoir to illustrate the bucolic treasure of this event. He was inspired to pen, for the Stoney Middleton Well Dressing, by their declining population. Swifts are now on the Red List, their numbers having dropped to a third of previous levels over the last 25 years.
The fastest birds in level flight, Swifts can achieve 69mph, spending almost their entire lives in flight – feeding, drinking, sleeping and even mating on the wing.
