Kingfishers

This highly stylised artwork is of a pair of Common Kingfishers (Alcedo atthis).
Their latin name Alcedo atthis is derived from the Latin alcedo, from the Greek halcyon, and Atthis, a beautiful young woman of Lesbos.
Kingfishers usually nest in a burrow excavated by both birds in a low vertical riverbank. In order to survive they must eat around 60% of their body weight each day, and as such it is essential to have control of a suitable and often long stretch of river. These birds are an indicator species living in habitats that have the highest quality of clear water that enables them to see necessary prey.
