Rock Climbing History all began here on Napes Needle...

Kirk Fell and Great Gable, part of the Western Fells, stand at the head of Wasdale in the Lake District. Great Gable is linked by the high pass of Windy Gap to its smaller sister hill, Green Gable, and by the lower pass of Beck Head to its western neighbour, Kirk Fell.

Gable Crag lies to the North and Westmorland Crags, Kern Knottslie and the Napes to the South.  The Napes are an important part of the history of English rock climbing as it is home to the detached pinnacle of Napes Needle (graded HS), one, if not, the first rock climb in this country, in 1886. Arguably, where rock climbing as a sport all began.

There is a plaque set on the summit of Great Gable for those members of the Fell & Rock Climbing Club who died in World War I. This is still commemorated by a memorial service held on Remembrance Sunday every year rain or shine.
